A Look at New Durham's Past
New Durham is one of the older communities in the Edison area. It started as a "crossroad community." This means it grew up where important roads met.
Other similar old communities include Piscatawaytown, Bonhamtown, New Dover, and Stelton. These places were around even before Edison was known as Raritan Township.
In 1834, people described New Durham as a small but busy place. It had a tavern, which was like an inn or a pub. There was also a store where people could buy supplies. About six houses made up the rest of the community.
