History of Stelton

Stelton has a long and interesting history. It was named after the Stelle family. They were early settlers who arrived in the area way back in 1668.

Stelton Baptist Church

The Stelton Baptist Church is very old. It was built in 1689. This makes it the second oldest Baptist church in all of New Jersey.

The Train Station

The train station in Stelton was built around 1870. It was first called "Stelton" station. This name honored the Stelle family, who were important in the area.

Later, in 1956, the Pennsylvania Railroad changed the station's name. It became "Edison" station. This change was made to honor the famous inventor, Thomas Alva Edison. The whole township of Edison was also named after him.
