The college doesn't have a separate art gallery. Instead, the artworks are shown throughout its buildings and outdoor areas. The college buildings themselves are quite modern. They were finished in 1965 and are considered important historical buildings.
How the Collection Started
The New Hall Art Collection grew thanks to many gifts. Artists and people who supported the college donated artworks. The collection began in 1986. The first artwork bought was "Extase" by Mary Kelly. This purchase was made possible by a grant and the artist's help.
Mary Kelly had been an artist living and working at the college. Her artwork inspired a big idea. The college hoped to build a permanent collection of art by women. The goal was to inspire the young women studying there.
In 1992, Dr Valerie Pearl was the college's President. She wrote to 100 top women artists in Britain. About 75 of them generously donated their art. The collection still grows today. It receives new artworks from artists and former students. This collection is the largest of its kind in Europe. About 95% of the artworks are always on display.
