New Llano is a small town located in Vernon Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. In 2010, about 2,504 people lived there. It is part of the area around Fort Johnson South.

This town was first called Stables. It got its new name when about 200 people from a special community called the Llano del Rio Cooperative Colony moved here in 1917. This colony was in California before. New Llano continued as a unique community where people shared their resources and wealth until 1937.

History of New Llano

Founding the Cooperative Colony

The New Llano Cooperative Colony started in 1917. A person named Job Harriman and other members of the Llano del Rio colony moved to Louisiana. They bought 20,000 acres of land that had been used for logging. This land was about two miles south of Leesville.

The place they chose was a sawmill town called Stables. The sawmill there had burned down twice, in 1913 and again in 1916. After the second fire, it was not rebuilt because there were no more trees to cut. So, the land was sold to the Cooperative Colony.

Life in the Colony

The people in the colony wanted to be self-sufficient. This means they wanted to produce everything they needed themselves. They did this by owning businesses together. These included a newspaper, a factory that made brooms, a sawmill, an ice plant, and a sheet metal factory.

The colony also had important places for its members. There was a school for children, an infirmary (a place for sick people), a hospital, and places for fun and games. This special community lasted for 20 years, closing down in 1937.
