History of New Madison
New Madison was first planned in 1817 by a person named Zadock Smith. He wanted to sell pieces of land, but he couldn't sell any. Two years later, Ernestus Putnam bought the land. He replanned the village and started selling lots in 1831. Unlike Smith, Putnam was successful, and a community began to grow.
Ernestus Putnam named the village "New Madison" because he used to live in Madison, Indiana. The first church in the community was a Presbyterian church. The village also had a school early on. The school building was replaced in 1870 with a bigger, two-story building. Later, in 1897, an even larger school was built.
