History of New Philadelphia
New Philadelphia has a rich history, especially linked to mining.
Coal Mining Past
For many years, New Philadelphia was an important town for mining anthracite coal. This type of coal is very hard and burns cleanly, making it valuable. The coal mines brought many people to the area looking for work.
Community and Churches
Because many people from different backgrounds came to work in the mines, the town had a mix of cultures. For example, there were many people of Lithuanian and Irish heritage. Sometimes, there were disagreements between these groups.
This led to the creation of two separate Catholic churches. One was Sacred Heart, mainly for Lithuanians. The other was Holy Family, mainly for Irish residents. These churches helped bring their communities together.
Over time, the communities grew closer. In 2008, the two Catholic churches, Sacred Heart and Holy Family, joined together. They formed a new church called Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church.
In 2012, a new church, Souls Harvest Baptist Church, moved into town. They are now in the oldest building in New Philadelphia, which used to be a Methodist church.
