New Territory is a special kind of neighborhood in Sugar Land, Texas. It is known as a master-planned community. This means it was carefully designed with homes, parks, and community areas.

New Territory used to be a separate area called a census-designated place (CDP). It was also outside the main city limits of Sugar Land. On December 12, 2017, New Territory officially became part of Sugar Land. In 2010, about 15,186 people lived there.

History of New Territory

New Territory was first opened in 1989. For many years, it was a community that stood on its own.

In November 2016, the city council of Sugar Land made an important decision. They voted to make New Territory a part of Sugar Land. This change happened at the end of 2017. The annexation became official on December 12, 2017.

Geography and Location

New Territory is located in the eastern part of Fort Bend County, Texas. You can find it at these coordinates: 29.594657 degrees North, -95.677561 degrees West.

The city of Sugar Land borders New Territory to the east and south. The Brazos River also forms part of its southern edge. U.S. Route 90 runs along the northern side of the community.

The total area of New Territory is about 12.4 square kilometers (4.8 square miles). Most of this area is land, around 12.0 square kilometers (4.6 square miles). A small part, about 0.4 square kilometers (0.15 square miles), is water.

People Living in New Territory

In 2000, there were 13,861 people living in New Territory. This number grew to 15,186 by 2010.

Many families live in New Territory. In 2000, about 67.6% of homes had children under 18. Most households were married couples living together. The average household had about 3.47 people.

The population of New Territory is quite diverse. In 2000, people from many different backgrounds lived there. The community has a mix of White, African American, Asian, and Hispanic or Latino residents.

The average age of people in New Territory in 2000 was 31 years old. About 34.8% of the population was under 18 years old. This shows it's a community with many young people and families.

Community Life and Culture

New Territory has a community club for its residents. This club includes a gymnasium where people can play sports. It also has an exercise room for workouts.

A comedy movie called The Legend of Action Man was filmed in New Territory. The people who made the movie lived and met in the area.

Elementary Schools

Middle Schools

All students in New Territory attend Sartartia Middle School. Before 2001, Garcia Middle School served the area.

High Schools

For high school, some students go to Austin High School. Other students attend Travis High School. Before 2006, all students went to Austin High School. When Travis High School opened, the zoning changed.

College Education

The Texas Legislature has chosen Wharton County Junior College as the college for Sugar Land. This includes New Territory.
