Stephen F. Austin High School is a public high school located near Sugar Land, Texas. It is named after Stephen F. Austin, an important figure in Texas history. He helped many American families settle in Texas. People often call him "The Father of Texas." The school is very close to where Austin's first colony was located.

Austin High School serves students in grades 9 through 12. It is part of the Fort Bend Independent School District. While the school has a Sugar Land address, it is actually just outside the city limits. Only students from the New Territory area live within Sugar Land city limits.

School History

Austin High School first opened its doors in 1995. It was built to help reduce the number of students at nearby Kempner High School and Clements High School. Austin was the sixth large high school opened by the Fort Bend Independent School District.

When Travis High School opened later, some of Austin's student areas were moved to Travis. At the same time, Austin gained some new student areas from Kempner High School. For these changes, students in 9th and 10th grades immediately went to their new school. Older students in 11th and 12th grades stayed at their original schools for a while.

In 2006, a small area called Smithville was changed from Kempner to Austin. This area included homes for employees of a state prison. Ninth and tenth graders from Smithville went to Austin right away. Older students continued at Kempner for a short time. Later, Smithville was moved back to Kempner. The main part of the prison stayed zoned to Austin until it closed in 2011.

School Campus

Austin High School is located off a road called FM 1464. It is across from Shiloh Lake Estates and Grand Parkway Baptist Church. The school is surrounded by different neighborhoods. To the south is Summerfield, and to the east is Pheasant Creek. The Safari Texas Ranch banquet hall is on the north side. Two other schools, Oyster Creek Elementary and Macario Garcia Middle School, are also nearby. Many students from these schools will later attend Austin High School.

All these areas are zoned to Macario Garcia Middle School first.

The eastern part of New Territory is also zoned to Austin High School. This area is actually inside the city of Sugar Land. Students from this part of New Territory attend Sartartia Middle School before coming to Austin. In the past, Austin High School also served parts of Mission Bend and Pecan Grove.
