The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is a special group in New York State. It's run by students and works to make things better for people. This group is non-partisan, meaning it doesn't favor one political party. It also works as a non-profit organization. NYPIRG has been around since 1973. Its current leader is Megan Ahearn. The person who helped start it was Donald K. Ross.
NYPIRG is guided by a Board of Directors made up of students. These students are elected by other students. Any project or idea NYPIRG works on must be approved by this student board. NYPIRG is one of the biggest Public Interest Research Groups. These groups were inspired by Ralph Nader in the 1970s. They work at the state level. After leaving Columbia University, former U.S. President Barack Obama worked at NYPIRG. He was part of their City College Chapter.
NYPIRG works on many important issues. These include making college more affordable for students. They also help protect consumers from unfair practices. Other topics they focus on are clean energy and making sure the government is fair. They also work on helping people who are hungry or homeless. Improving public transportation in New York City is another goal. They also help make sure everyone has the right to vote.

NYPIRG at Colleges
A big part of NYPIRG's work happens at college campuses. These campus groups are called chapters. You can find NYPIRG chapters at schools in the State University of New York (SUNY) system. They are also at schools in the City University of New York (CUNY) system. Two private colleges, Pratt Institute and Syracuse University, also have chapters. Students at these schools help fund the chapters. They do this through activity fees. These fees are often voted on by students or decided by student governments.
