New Zealand Dollar facts for kids
The New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is the official money used in New Zealand. It is also used in the Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau, and the Pitcairn Islands. This currency started being used in 1967. Before that, New Zealand used the New Zealand Pound. One dollar is made up of 100 cents. People usually show the New Zealand Dollar with the $ or NZ$ symbol.
New Zealand Coins
When the New Zealand Dollar first came out in 1967, there were coins for 1 cent, 2 cents, 5 cents, 10 cents, 20 cents, and 50 cents. The 1 and 2 cent coins were made of copper. The other coins were made from a mix of metals called cupro-nickel.
Changes to Coins Over Time
By 1990, the 1 cent and 2 cent coins were no longer made or used. In 1991, the paper money for 1 dollar and 2 dollars was replaced with coins. These new dollar coins were made from aluminium-bronze.
In 2006, the New Zealand Government made more changes to the coins. They decided to stop using the 5 cent coin. Also, all the other coins (except for the 1 and 2 dollar coins) were made smaller. The new, smaller 10 cent coin was also changed to be made of copper.
