Newburg, Louisville facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Newburg is an area in Jefferson County, Kentucky, United States. It used to be a special kind of place called a census-designated place, which is like a town that isn't officially a city. In 2000, about 20,636 people lived there.

On January 6, 2003, Newburg became part of the city of Louisville. This happened because Louisville and the areas around it decided to merge together. Now, Newburg is known as a neighborhood within the larger city of Louisville.

A Look Back: Newburg's History

The land that is now Newburg was first settled in the 1820s by four families from Germany. About ten years later, it was a small village known as Newburgh. Later, the 'h' was dropped, and the name became "Newburg." This new spelling was used for the local post office by the end of the 1800s.

Newburg has always had a community of Black residents. Long ago, this community was centered near an area called Petersburg. In 1851, a free Black couple named Eliza and Henry Tevis owned a 40-acre farm there. After the Civil War, many formerly enslaved Black people bought land in the area and started their own farms.

Even into the 1900s, Newburg and Petersburg were mostly surrounded by farms. Newburg became the main name for the whole area, probably because of the post office. By the 1960s, more and more people started moving from the city to the suburbs. Newburg became a popular place for middle-class Black families looking for homes outside the main city. Today, the area still has a large Black population.

For a short time, from 1982 to 1987, Newburg was its own official city. However, many people didn't like this idea, so it eventually stopped being a separate city.

In August 2009, a brand new library opened in Newburg. This modern library, which cost $1.9 million, focuses on education and technology. It was built with help from the Library Foundation and support from the community.
