Different Sections of Route 460
Route 460 is made up of several unique parts, each with its own history and name.
White's Road
The first part, about 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) long, runs from Harry's Brook to an interchange with Route 461 near Long Gull Pond. This section was built in the early 1960s when the Trans-Canada Highway was being constructed across Newfoundland.
Hansen Memorial Highway
Next is the Hansen Memorial Highway, which is about 16 kilometers (10 miles) long. It connects Long Gull Pond to an interchange with Route 490 in Stephenville. The United States Army Corps of Engineers built this part of the road. They created it to link the Ernest Harmon Air Force Base to the main Newfoundland Railway line.
Kippens Road
After Stephenville, you'll find the Kippens Road. This section is about 4.5 kilometers (2.8 miles) long and goes to the western edge of Kippens.
Port au Port Highway
The final and longest section is the Port au Port Highway. It's about 51 kilometers (31.7 miles) long. This part continues from Kippens, goes through Port au Port, and follows the south coast of the Port au Port Peninsula all the way to Cape St. George. This route is also known as "The French Ancestors Route."

Building the Hansen Memorial Highway
The US Army Corps of Engineers started building the Stephenville bypass road in the 1950s. This project was a big deal! One group, Company C, began working from Stephenville. Another group, Company B, started near Cormiers Village and worked in two directions: towards Long Gull Pond and towards Stephenville. Company B had to start at Cormiers Village because they were waiting for land agreements to be finalized closer to Stephenville.
This highway project was about 18 kilometers (11 miles) long. First, they built one half of the road using a method called "corduroy roads," which involves laying logs side-by-side. When they reached Long Gull Pond in the fall of 1954, they built the other half. The road was then extended along the Newfoundland Railway main line from Long Gull Pond to Stephenville Crossing. This part is now the eastern end of Route 461.
To help with construction, three access roads, each about two miles long, were needed. These access roads were built to the same strong standards as the main bypass road because they were used constantly for moving heavy materials. A concrete bridge was built over Cold Creek in 1954. Another 20-meter (60-foot) concrete bridge was built over Warm Creek in 1956.
The project used a huge amount of material. They needed 70,000 cubic meters (90,000 cubic yards) of fill dirt and 20,000 cubic meters (30,000 cubic yards) of crushed rock for the road's base. The top layer, where cars drive, needed 10,000 cubic meters (15,000 cubic yards) of gravel, about 19 inches thick, before the asphalt was put down. All the construction equipment and materials were kept at a depot near Long Gull Pond.
The bypass road was officially opened for both military and public use in October 1957. It was a major improvement for travel in the area!
