Newport is a small, quiet community in New Jersey. It is located within Downe Township in Cumberland County. Newport is known as an "unincorporated community." This means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's also a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means the U.S. Census Bureau counts its population separately.
The area has its own ZIP Code, 08345. In 2000, about 834 people lived in the area. By 2020, the population was 487 people.
Newport is a very rural place, meaning it feels like the countryside. You can see many older homes there, built in styles like colonial, craftsman, and Victorian.

Transportation and Nature
County Route 553 is the main road that goes through Newport. In the past, many dirt roads along the coast were used for moving "salt hay."
What is Salt Hay?
Salt hay comes from a special type of grass called Saltmeadow Cordgrass. This grass grows in marshy areas near the coast. Salt hay marshes are very important for nature. They help clean up pollution and protect the land from floods and erosion. People used to harvest this hay for different reasons. It was used as bedding for farm animals and as food for them. Farmers also used it as mulch in their gardens to help plants grow.
Local History and Community Life
Newport has a special book about its history called Erma's Newport Journal. This book was created from two journals written by Erma Moncrief. A longtime resident named Emily Stites helped put the book together. After Emily Stites passed away, another notable resident, Emma Allen, finished the book in 2006. The book was sold for $10.00. You can find a copy of it at the library at Downe Township Elementary School.
Places to Visit
There are two churches in Newport: Newport Baptist and Newport Methodist. For everyday needs, you can find Barnett's gas station and Newport Deli right on Route 553. If you're looking for a meal, The Landing Restaurant is located on the bank of the Nantuxent Creek. The Sundog Marina is right next to the restaurant. From Sundog Marina, you can travel through the Nantuxent Creek to reach the Delaware Bay.
