The Newport Art Museum began as the Art Association of Newport. It's one of the oldest art groups in the United States that has been open all this time. The association started when many artists were moving to places like Newport to create art. This time was known as the art colony movement. It was also when the Impressionist art style was popular. The group had strong connections to the art scene in New York City.
In 1916, the Art Association bought the Griswold House. This gave them a permanent place to show off amazing artworks.
