Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Nganguruku are an Indigenous Australian group of people. They traditionally lived in the state of South Australia.

What Language Did They Speak?

The Nganguruku people spoke their own language. It was similar to the language of the Ngaiawang people. However, it had its own special differences. Sometimes, people confused the two groups because their languages were alike.

Where Did the Nganguruku Live?

The Nganguruku people lived on their traditional lands. These lands covered about 600 square miles (1,600 km2) (about 1,550 square kilometers). Their country was around the Murray River. It stretched from Mannum on the west bank. It went all the way to the south Rhine River junction. To the west, their land reached the Mount Lofty Ranges.

A Look at Their History

The Nganguruku were a smaller First Nations group. Over time, they lost some of their traditional lands. This happened when new settlers, called pastoralists, arrived. Many Nganguruku people moved to places like the Manunka Mission. Later, some moved to live near Morgan. Today, people with Nganguruku family connections still live in that area.
