Ngawi (pronounced "ngaa-wee") is a small, unique village in New Zealand. It's a popular spot for fishing and holidays. You can find it very close to Cape Palliser, which is the southernmost tip of New Zealand's North Island. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage says the name Ngāwī means "the native tussock grass".

Fishing Fun in Ngawi

Ngawi is a busy place for both professional and hobby fishermen. The ocean here is full of interesting sea creatures. You can find pāua, which is a type of abalone. It's special because its shell is super shiny and colorful. Fishermen also catch crayfish (also called rock lobster) and cod.

Bulldozers and Boats

Ngawi is famous for having more bulldozers than almost anywhere else! These powerful machines are not used for building. Instead, they help fishermen launch and pull their boats out of the water. There isn't a dock or a pier in Ngawi. So, the beach is the only way to get boats into the ocean. The waves can be very strong here.

Crayfish caught in Ngawi are often sent alive to other countries. In 2011, about twelve professional fishermen worked from Ngawi. Most of them did not live in the village itself.

Life in Ngawi Village

The village of Ngawi is mostly made up of small wooden houses. In New Zealand, these holiday homes are called baches. During the summer, the village gets much busier. That's when all the holiday homes are full of people enjoying their time off.

There are no shops in Ngawi. If you need to buy something, the closest town is Pirinoa. It's about 37.5 kilometers (23 miles) north of Ngawi. The nearest school is also in Pirinoa.

Weather and Landscape

Ngawi is known for its wild weather. It can be very windy for a long time, and there are hardly any trees around. This is because of the strong winds. Even with all the wind, summer days can get extremely hot.

The coastline near Ngawi can be very rough. Because of this, several ships have unfortunately been wrecked here over the years.

Ngawi in Film

In May 2006, a filmmaker named Peter Salmon chose Ngawi as the location for his short film. The film was called 'Fog'. Peter Salmon was drawn to Ngawi because of its unique landscape. He liked how isolated and special the area felt.

'Fog' was shown for the first time at Critic's Week. This was part of the famous Cannes Film Festival in 2007. The film starred Joe Dekkers-Reihana, Chelsie Crayford Preston, Jim Moriarty, and Tina Cook.
