Roger Nicholas Edwards, also known as Lord Crickhowell, was an important British politician. He was a member of the Conservative Party. He served as a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1970 to 1987. He also held a big job called Secretary of State for Wales. This was during the time Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister.

Early Life and Education

Nicholas Edwards went to Westminster School when he was young. After school, he joined the Royal Welch Fusiliers for a short time. This was part of a program called National Service. Then, he went to Trinity College, Cambridge University. He studied history there and finished in 1957. Before becoming a politician, he worked in insurance. He was a director at William Brandt's insurance brokers.

Political Career Highlights

Nicholas Edwards became a politician in 1968. He was chosen to represent the area of Pembrokeshire. In the 1970 general election, he was elected to the House of Commons. This is where MPs work. He represented Pembrokeshire until 1987.

From 1975 to 1979, he was the Opposition Spokesman for Welsh Affairs. This meant he was the main person from the opposition party who spoke about issues in Wales. He was like the "Shadow" Secretary of State for Wales.

When Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister in 1979, Edwards was given the job of Secretary of State for Wales. This is a very important role in the government. He was in charge of many things related to Wales. He kept this job until 1987.

After leaving the House of Commons, he was given a special honor. He became a life peer on 15 October 1987. This meant he could sit in the House of Lords. He was then known as Baron Crickhowell.

Later Public Service

After his time as Secretary of State, Lord Crickhowell continued to serve the public. From 1989 to 1996, he was the chairman of the National Rivers Authority (NRA). This group was in charge of protecting rivers and water in England and Wales. He worked hard to protect the environment. He also supported strict rules against big companies that polluted.

Lord Crickhowell also played a big part in trying to get a permanent home for the Welsh National Opera in Cardiff. He strongly believed they needed a special building. When the government said no to the plans in 1995, he spoke out against his former colleagues.

He remained a member of the House of Lords for over 30 years. He was also involved with universities. He was given an honorary award from Cardiff University in 1984. He also served as president of the university from 1988 to 1998. In 2001, he received another honorary degree from the University of Glamorgan.
