Known for Bible translation into Irish

Nicholas Walsh was an important religious leader in Ireland who lived a long time ago. He was a Bishop of Ossory in the Church of Ireland. He is famous for helping to get prayer books and teaching materials printed in the Irish language. He also started the huge job of translating the Bible into Irish. Sadly, he could not finish this important work before he died in 1585.

Early Life and Career

Nicholas Walsh was the son of Patrick Walsh. His father was also a bishop, serving in Waterford and Lismore. Nicholas became a priest in 1567.

Spreading the Irish Language

Nicholas Walsh believed it was important for people to understand religious texts in their own language. He helped introduce prayer books and catechisms (books of religious teachings) that were printed in Irish. This made it easier for Irish-speaking people to learn about their faith.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1571, Nicholas Walsh became the Chancellor of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin. This was an important role in the church. Later, in 1578, he was appointed Bishop of Ossory. This meant he was a main religious leader for a large area.

Translating the Bible

Starting in 1573, Bishop Walsh began a very big project. He started working on translating the New Testament part of the Bible into the Irish language. This was a huge task because it meant carefully changing every word from its original language into Irish.

The Work Continues

Sadly, Nicholas Walsh's important work ended suddenly when he died in Kilkenny on December 14, 1585. Even though he couldn't finish the Bible translation himself, others continued his mission. His assistant, John Kearney, took over. Later, Nehemiah Donnellan and William Daniel (also known as Uilliam Ó Domhnaill) continued the translation. Both of these men later became Archbishops of Tuam. Thanks to their efforts, the Bible was eventually translated into Irish, fulfilling Nicholas Walsh's dream.
