Early Life and Family
Nicholas Weston was born in 1611 in Roxwell, a town in Essex, England. His father was Richard Weston, 1st Earl of Portland, a very important person. Nicholas's mother was Frances Walgrave, his father's second wife.
Nicholas also had an older brother named Jerome Weston, 2nd Earl of Portland. Jerome was the Governor of the Isle of Wight, which meant he was in charge of that island.
Political Career in Parliament
In April 1640, Nicholas Weston was chosen to be a Member of Parliament (MP). He represented the area of Newtown in Parliament. This Parliament was called the Short Parliament because it only lasted for a short time.
Later that same year, in November 1640, Nicholas was chosen again as an MP for Newtown. This time, he was part of the Long Parliament. This Parliament lasted for many years.
Role in the English Civil War
The English Civil War began in 1642. Nicholas Weston supported the King's side, known as the Royalists. He helped defend the city of Portsmouth for the Royalists.
Because he supported the King, Nicholas was not allowed to be a Member of Parliament anymore. This happened in 1642, early in the war.
