Nick Benedict (born Nicholas Joseph Sciurba) was an American actor and musician. He was born on July 14, 1946, and passed away on his birthday, July 14, 2023. He was famous for his roles in TV shows called soap operas and in movies made for television. Many people knew him as Curtis Reed in the TV show Days of Our Lives. He played this role from 1993 to 2001. He was even nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for playing Philip Brent in the soap opera All My Children.
Early Life
Nick Benedict was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1946. His father, Richard Benedict, was also an actor and director. Before he started acting, Nick served in the United States Navy.
Acting Career
Nick Benedict started acting as a child in 1955. His first role was in the TV series Wiretapper, where he appeared with his father. When he was 17, he had his first adult role in a movie called Mike and the Mermaid. Later, in the late 1960s, he had small roles in TV shows like Ironside and Hawaii Five-O.
In 1969, he was in an episode of the TV series Mission Impossible called The Vault. His first big role was as Philip Brent in the ABC soap opera All My Children. He played this character from 1973 to 1978. He took over the role from another actor, Richard Hatch. In his last year on the show, he was nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for his acting. He also appeared in other TV shows like Medical Center and Knots Landing.
From 1980 to 1981, Nick Benedict played Michael Scott on The Young and the Restless. Then, from 1982 to 1983, he was Ron Washington on Another Life. He also appeared as Frank James in an episode of The Dukes of Hazzard. In 1985, he played a lawyer named Michael Fox in an episode of Tales from the Darkside. He was also in seven episodes of Santa Barbara.
In the late 1980s, Nick Benedict took a short break from acting. He shared in an interview that this was after his father passed away. During this time, he managed a construction business. He also performed music with different groups in nightclubs.
In 1990, he starred with Nancy Allen in a TV movie called Memories of a Murder. That same year, he appeared in thirty episodes of the TV series Tribes. In 1991, he had a small part in a sports film called The Pistol: The Birth of a Legend.
One of his most well-known roles was as Curtis Reed in Days of Our Lives. He played this character on and off from 1993 to 2001, appearing in 93 episodes. In the 1990s, he mostly acted in films, alongside his role in Days of Our Lives. He played Eddie in the 1996 film Angela Mooney Dies Again with famous actors like Mia Farrow and Brendan Gleeson. His last appearance on screen was a small role in the movie Kept in 2001.
Personal Life
Nick Benedict married Michelle Dow in 1976, but their marriage ended that same year. He later married Ginger Loli-Benedict in 2001, and they stayed together until his death. They lived in Bear Valley, Santa Cruz County, Arizona. Besides acting, Nick Benedict was also a painter and a musician.
In July 2023, Nick Benedict was hospitalized for a spinal cord surgery. After the surgery, he was moved to hospice care because he became paralyzed. He passed away on July 14, 2023, which was his 77th birthday. His death was due to complications from the surgery.
