Early Life and Education
Nick Osipczak was born in London, England. His father has Polish roots, and his mother is American with English, German, Irish, and Serbian heritage. He grew up in South London and went to St. Olaves Grammar School.
After graduating in 2003, he attended Loughborough University. He earned a degree in Mathematics, Accounting, and Financial Management in 2007.
Journey into Martial Arts
From Kung Fu to MMA
When he was 18, Nick joined a martial arts club at his university. He practiced Shaolin Kung Fu and became very good, even winning the UK National Kung Fu Open Weight Championship.
Nick was inspired to try Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) after watching a DVD of UFC knockouts. He began looking for the best coaches in the United Kingdom to learn this new sport. He even became a sparring partner for top UK fighters like Michael Bisping.
After training for two years, Osipczak started competing. He won all of his amateur and semi-professional fights. In March 2008, he had his first professional MMA fight and won in just 76 seconds. He won his next two professional fights quickly, bringing his record to 3-0.
The Ultimate Fighter
Osipczak's impressive early wins helped him get a spot on the TV show The Ultimate Fighter: United States vs. United Kingdom. To get on the show, he had to win an elimination match, which he did by knockout in the first round.
On the show, he fought against Mark Miller from the American team. Osipczak won with a powerful head kick in the second round. This knockout was later chosen as one of the top 15 knockouts in the show's history. He lost his next fight in the semi-finals, but UFC President Dana White called it one of the best fights in the show's history.
Career in the UFC
Osipczak made his official UFC debut on June 20, 2009. He fought Frank Lester, another contestant from The Ultimate Fighter. Osipczak won the fight by making his opponent submit. This great performance earned him a contract for three more fights with the UFC.
His next fight was against Matthew Riddle at UFC 105 in Manchester, England. Osipczak controlled the fight with his striking and grappling. In the final round, the referee stopped the fight because Osipczak was landing many punches and elbows. Commentator Joe Rogan called it a "huge performance by Osipczak."
After this win, Osipczak had three tough fights that he lost by decision. This means the fights went the full length, and the judges scored them for his opponents. Some of these decisions were controversial, with many people thinking Osipczak should have won.
Return to Competition
After a break of almost five years, Nick returned to fighting on June 27, 2015. He fought Kyle Redfearn and won in the first round by submission. This fight was special because it was the first time tai chi was officially represented in an MMA competition.
After his return, Osipczak stated that he aimed to win the UFC belt by 2018.
Personal Life
Nick lives in Oxfordshire, UK, with his partner and their son, Shen. The name Shen means "Spirit" in Chinese. His sister, Alex Osipczak, is a popular YouTuber.
In his free time, Nick enjoys reading about Chinese philosophy and martial arts. He is also a talented painter and was once featured in a documentary about his art.
