Nickel-metal hydride battery facts for kids
A nickel-metal hydride battery, often called NiMH, is a type of rechargeable battery. This means you can use it many times by charging it up again. NiMH batteries are popular in many electronic gadgets, like cameras and portable game consoles. They come in different sizes, with the AA size being the most common one you'll see.
NiMH batteries are a good choice because they do not contain harmful chemicals like the older nickel-cadmium (NiCd) batteries do. This makes them safer for the environment.

How NiMH Batteries Work
NiMH batteries create electricity through a chemical reaction. Inside the battery, special compounds called hydrides react with nickel(III) oxide. This reaction releases electrons, which is what we use as electricity.
Older NiMH batteries used to lose their charge quickly when not in use. However, newer NiMH batteries are much better at holding their charge for a long time, even when stored. This means they are ready to go when you need them.
NiMH vs. Other Batteries
NiMH batteries have some great advantages when compared to other types:
- Durability: They are often more durable than lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.
- Shelf Life: They can hold their charge for a longer time when stored compared to older battery types.
- Power: While Li-ion batteries are generally more powerful for their size, the best NiMH batteries are now very close in performance.
- Cost: NiMH batteries used to be more expensive than NiCd batteries. Today, their cost is quite similar, making them an affordable option.
- Safety: Unlike NiCd batteries, NiMH batteries do not contain toxic chemicals like cadmium.
Common Uses of NiMH Batteries
NiMH batteries are found in many everyday items. You might use them in:
- Digital cameras
- Remote controls
- Portable audio players
- Toys
- Cordless phones
- Some hybrid electric vehicles, like the Toyota Prius, also use large NiMH battery packs.
