Nickelodeon Pakistan, also known as Nick Pakistan, is a TV channel in Pakistan that you pay to watch. It's the Pakistani version of the famous Nickelodeon channel. The ARY Group's Digital Network runs it. They have a special agreement with Paramount Networks EMEAA to use the Nickelodeon brand and shows.

The channel broadcasts across Pakistan using the AsiaSat 7 satellite. This means people with cable and satellite TV can watch it. Some shows are dubbed or have subtitles in Urdu. The channel also gets some content directly from its sister channel in India. Sometimes, it even shows children's movies from Western countries. Nickelodeon Pakistan used to be free to watch. However, since 2015, it has been encrypted, meaning you need to pay to access it.

History of Nickelodeon Pakistan

Before Nickelodeon Pakistan started, people in Pakistan watched the Indian version of Nickelodeon. But on November 23, 2006, ARY Digital Network launched Nickelodeon Pakistan. They signed a deal with Viacom to do this. After that, the Indian channel stopped being shown in Pakistan.

At first, most shows on Nickelodeon Pakistan were in English. Some shows were in Hindi instead of being dubbed into Urdu. Because of this, a group called PEMRA temporarily stopped the channel's license in 2016. But Nickelodeon Pakistan started broadcasting again later.

In 2010, Nickelodeon Pakistan updated its look to match the new worldwide style of Nickelodeon, including its logo. The channel's website closed down in early 2021. This was likely because it used older technology that was expensive to update. It was easier to use their Facebook page instead. On April 1, 2022, Nickelodeon Pakistan officially started showing all its programs in native Urdu or with Urdu dubbing.

Rules and Regulations for TV Channels

In 2005, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) made a rule. They said that some TV channels were not dubbing shows into Urdu or using Urdu subtitles. Instead, they used Hindi words or showed full Hindi versions of programs from India. PEMRA wanted channels to use Urdu.

In early 2010, PEMRA again sent a warning to children's TV channels. They stopped the licenses for Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. This meant these channels could not broadcast. During this time, the Pakistani government tried to get a local TV company, like PTV, to start a children's channel. This was to make sure the language rules were followed.

On August 1, 2011, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Firdous Ashiq Awan, announced that Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network could broadcast again. She was still hoping a Pakistani company would create a children's channel.

Challenges and Temporary Suspensions

After an event in 2016, PEMRA looked closely at Nickelodeon Pakistan again. The channel had started sharing shows with Nickelodeon India to save money. PEMRA felt that ARY was not following their rules by showing content with Hindi language from India. PEMRA ordered a ban on all Indian-made media after October 19. However, PEMRA believed ARY Group continued to show programs from Nickelodeon India with Hindi content.

So, on October 31, 2016, the channel's license was stopped. Local TV providers then removed the channel. But soon after, on November 10, a court order from the Sindh High Court allowed Nickelodeon to return to the air. The court said PEMRA did not have enough reason to stop the channel without a clear explanation.

On April 27, 2017, Nickelodeon Pakistan showed an episode of Winx Club. PEMRA said a character in the show was "indecently dressed." This went against the rules PEMRA set in 2015 for TV channels. After a month, PEMRA fined ARY 500,000. They also warned the channel not to break the rules again.
