Nicholas Mark Slater (born 6 April 1958), known as Nicky Slater, is a famous former ice dancer. After his skating career, he became a well-known TV personality and performer. He has also worked behind the scenes producing ice shows and as a singer-songwriter.

About Nicky Slater's Life

Nicky Slater comes from a family of ice dancers. His parents, Joan Dewhirst Slater and John Slater, were also top ice dancers. They won silver medals at the World Championships in 1952 and 1953. After they stopped competing, they became ice skating coaches in England.

Nicky went to school in Altrincham, England. He is married to Christiane and they have a son named Benjamin Edward, who was born in 2008. Nicky now lives in Kelowna, Canada.

Nicky Slater had a very successful career as a competitive ice dancer.

Early Success

His first skating partner was Kathryn Winter. Together, they won the World Junior Championships in 1976. This was a big achievement for them!

Partnering with Karen Barber

After his partnership with Kathryn ended, Nicky teamed up with Karen Barber. They became a very strong ice dance team.

  • In 1983, they won a bronze medal at the European Championships.
  • They represented Great Britain at the Winter Olympics twice. They finished 12th at the 1980 Olympics and improved to 6th place at the 1984 Olympics.
  • In 1985, they became the British ice dance champions.

Life After Competing

After retiring from competitive skating, Nicky Slater continued to be involved in the world of ice skating and entertainment.

Producing Ice Shows

Nicky has produced many ice skating events. His first big show was "Sport Aid" in 1986, which raised money for charity. He also created "skate-along," a national skating event to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. He even organized ice gala tours in the UK to support cystic fibrosis research.

He also produced large ice shows in the United States with his company, Adventure On Ice. He worked with famous skater Robin Cousins on these shows. Some of these shows were for TV networks like NBC and ESPN.

Theatre and Music

Nicky has also performed in theatre shows. In 2005, he produced and starred in "The Finding a Wife Tour." In 2008, he created and performed in "Ice Times," touring UK theatres and skating with other performers.

Since 2006, Nicky has focused on his passion for music. He is now a singer-songwriter and music producer. He learned about music from a young age, helping his father edit music for ice dance performances.

Nicky Slater is well-known for his work on television.

  • He has worked as an expert and commentator for ice skating shows on ITV, Channel 4, and British Eurosport. He helps viewers understand the sport better.
  • He was a judge on the BBC One show Strictly Ice Dancing in 2004.
  • From 2006, he was a judge on the popular ITV celebrity skating show Dancing on Ice for five years. He also worked on Dancing on Ice: The Tour.
  • In 2014, he returned to Dancing on Ice as a judge for a few weeks when Robin Cousins was away at the Winter Olympics.
