What's in a Name?

The name "Nicobi" has an interesting history. An explorer named Henry O'Sullivan traveled through this area between 1897 and 1899. On his map from 1900, he marked this lake as "L. Nicobi."

About 125 kilometres (78 mi) to the east, you can find another lake called Nicabau. Both "Nicobi" and "Nicabau" (which is "nekupau") come from the Innu language. They are believed to mean "lake with spikes of hay" or "woods of alders."

The official name "Lake Nicobi" was formally recognized on December 5, 1968. This was done by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is the organization responsible for naming places in Quebec.
