The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) is a special college in British Columbia, Canada. It is British Columbia's public college for Aboriginal people. NVIT first opened its doors in 1983. It helps students learn and grow, preparing them for future jobs and leadership roles.

About NVIT's History

NVIT was started in 1983 by five First Nations groups. These groups were Coldwater, Nooaitch, Shackan, Upper Nicola, and Lower Nicola. At first, it was a private school. In 1995, the government officially recognized NVIT as a public college. For many years, NVIT was located in downtown Merritt, British Columbia. A new main campus called "The Eagles Perch" opened in 2002.

NVIT is also part of a group called the Indigenous Adult and Higher Learning Association (IAHLA). This group was created in 2003. It helps support and represent colleges in British Columbia that are run by Aboriginal people.

Where are the Campuses?

NVIT has two main locations where students can study. The main campus is in Merritt, British Columbia. You can find it at 4155 Belshaw Street. There is also another campus in Burnaby, British Columbia. This campus is located at 200-4355 Mathissi Place.

Understanding Cybersecurity at NVIT

In December 2019, NVIT had a problem with its computer systems. This was a "ransomware" attack. It meant that most of NVIT's technology systems stopped working. The school worked hard to fix everything and get back online.
