The Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) is a special school in British Columbia, Canada. It's the only public college in the province specifically for Indigenous students. NVIT first opened its doors in 1983. Its main goal is to share knowledge and help prepare future leaders.
History of NVIT
NVIT was started in 1983 by five First Nations communities: Coldwater, Nooaitch, Shackan, Upper Nicola, and Lower Nicola. At first, it was a private school. In 1995, the government of British Columbia officially recognized NVIT as a public college. For many years, NVIT was located in the downtown area of Merritt, British Columbia. A new main campus, called the Eagles Perch campus, opened in 2002.
NVIT is also part of a group called the Indigenous Adult and Higher Learning Association (IAHLA). This group was formed in 2003. It helps support and represent colleges in British Columbia that are run by Aboriginal communities.
NVIT Campuses
NVIT has two main locations where students can learn.
- The Merritt Campus is located at 4155 Belshaw Street in Merritt, British Columbia.
- The Vancouver Campus is located at 200-4355 Mathissi Place in Burnaby, British Columbia.
Cybersecurity at NVIT
In December 2019, NVIT experienced a cybersecurity incident. This was a ransomware attack that affected most of the school's computer systems. The school worked to restore its technology and keep learning going.
