Playing Career Highlights
Starting Out in Denmark
Nicolai Boilesen began his football journey at local clubs like Lille Hema IF and Skovlunde IF. He then joined Brøndby IF, a well-known Danish club, in 2004. As a young player, he looked up to Daniel Agger, a famous Danish defender.
Boilesen quickly showed his talent. He started playing for the Denmark U17 national team in 2007. During his time at Brøndby, he played 38 games for various Danish youth teams.
Moving to Ajax
Many big European clubs, including Manchester United and Chelsea, were interested in Boilesen. However, he chose to move to the Netherlands and join Ajax in 2009. He signed a four-year contract.
He chose Ajax after getting advice from his friend and fellow Danish youth player, Christian Eriksen, who was already at the club. His first season at Ajax was tough due to injuries. But once he recovered, he became a key player for the Ajax under-19 team. He even played for the reserve team, Jong Ajax.

Boilesen joined the main Ajax team for the 2010–11 season. He made his first professional appearance on 3 April 2011, coming on as a substitute in a 3–0 win. For the 2011–12 season, his coach, Frank de Boer, chose him as the main left back.
Unfortunately, Boilesen faced more injuries. A hamstring injury in September 2011 kept him out for several months. He tried to return but got injured again during practice, which meant he missed the entire 2012–13 season.
Strong Comeback and First Goal
On 27 July 2013, Boilesen made a great return to the first team. He played in a cup match against AZ, which Ajax won 3–2. He also played for Jong Ajax in the Eerste Divisie, a Dutch league.
In September 2013, his coach surprised everyone by playing him on the left wing in a UEFA Champions League match against FC Barcelona. On 10 November 2013, he scored his first official goal for Ajax in a 2–0 win. He also helped Ajax beat FC Barcelona 2–1 in a later match.
In June 2015, Boilesen decided not to extend his contract with Ajax. Because of this, he did not play any games for the team during the 2015–16 season. His contract ended after that season.
Joining FC Copenhagen
On 25 August 2016, Boilesen signed a four-year contract with FC Copenhagen. This was a big move because Copenhagen is a major rival of his childhood club, Brøndby IF.
On 22 May 2025, Nicolai Boilesen announced that he was retiring from playing football. He made this decision because of ongoing injuries.
Playing for Denmark
Boilesen also played for the Danish national team. In May 2018, he was part of the first group of players chosen for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, he did not make it into the final team of 23 players.
He was also selected for Denmark's team for the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament. This competition took place in 2021 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Denmark played all their group matches in Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
Coaching Career
After retiring as a player, Boilesen started a new chapter in his football career. In July 2025, it was confirmed that he had become an assistant coach for the Denmark U16 team.
