Nicolai Boilesen's Football Journey
Starting Out in Denmark
Nicolai Boilesen began playing football at small local clubs. These were Lille Hema IF and Skovlunde IF. Both clubs are located near his hometown of Ballerup, Denmark.
In 2004, he joined a bigger club called Brøndby IF. He played as a central defender and used his left foot well. He looked up to Daniel Agger, another Danish player who also played for Brøndby.
Nicolai started playing for the Denmark U17 national team in July 2007. During his time at Brøndby, he played 38 games for different Danish youth teams.
Moving to Ajax
Many big European clubs were interested in Nicolai. These included Manchester United, Fiorentina, and Chelsea. His contract with Brøndby was ending in December 2009.
He decided to move to the Netherlands and join Ajax. Ajax paid Brøndby about 500,000 Euros for him. He chose Ajax because his friend, Christian Eriksen, who also played for Denmark's youth team, was already there.
Nicolai signed a four-year contract with Ajax. He first joined their youth teams. His first season was tough because of injuries. But once he got better, he became a key player for the Ajax under-19 team. He even played for the reserve team, Jong Ajax.

Playing for the First Team
For the 2010–11 season, Nicolai joined the main Ajax team. He got the number 32 shirt. His first professional game was on April 3, 2011. He played the second half of a match where Ajax won 3–0 against Heracles Almelo.
In the 2011–12 season, his coach, Frank de Boer, chose him as the main left back. But in September 2011, he got a hamstring injury during a game against PSV. This injury kept him from playing until February 2012.
He tried to come back and even scored a goal in a reserve team game. But then he got another hamstring injury. This meant he missed the entire 2012–13 season.
Returning to the Field
On July 27, 2013, Nicolai finally returned to the first team. He played in a match against AZ, which Ajax won. Later, on September 18, 2013, his coach surprised everyone by playing him as a left winger in a UEFA Champions League game against FC Barcelona.
On November 10, 2013, he scored his first goal for Ajax. He also helped his team win against FC Barcelona in a return game. Because of his great play, he was chosen for the UEFA Champions League Team of the Week!
In June 2015, Nicolai decided not to sign a new contract with Ajax. Because of this, he didn't play any games in the 2015–16 season. His contract ended after that.
Joining FC Copenhagen
On August 25, 2016, Nicolai signed a four-year contract with FC Copenhagen. This was interesting because Copenhagen is a big rival of his childhood club, Brøndby IF.
Playing for Denmark
In May 2018, Nicolai was part of Denmark's first list of players for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, he was not chosen for the final team of 23 players.
He was later selected for Denmark's team for the UEFA Euro 2020 competition. This tournament happened in 2021 because of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Denmark played all their group matches in Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
