Her Early Life and Schooling

Nicole Carignan was born in a town called Plessisville. She loved music and studied it a lot! She earned several university degrees. These included a bachelor's degree in music education from the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She also earned a bachelor's and master's degree in composing music. Later, she earned a special doctorate degree from the Université de Montréal. This degree focused on how different cultures learn and teach.

Her Career and Work

Nicole Carignan has done many interesting things in her career. She has written articles about teaching music. She has also led workshops and seminars about composing music. She has shared her knowledge in places like South Africa, Europe, Russia, and the United States.

She is also a researcher. This means she studies and learns new things about education. She works with the Faculty of Education at the Université de Montréal. She also works with the Department of Education at UQAM and at Cleveland State University.

Carignan taught music for the Laval School Board. She also taught how to compose music at the Akademi Musik Indonesia in Yogyakarta, Java. She was a professor at Cleveland State University. Now, she teaches about education and different cultures at UQAM. She also taught at the University of Port Elizabeth in South Africa.

Music Box Project

Nicole Carignan worked on a special project called "Music Box." This was a series of CD-ROMs. These CD-ROMs helped people explore music from different cultures around the world. In 1997, this project won an "Award of Excellence." This award came from the Alliance for Children and Television.

Musical Compositions

Carignan has created many musical pieces. These include music for single instruments and for full orchestras. More than fifty of her musical works have been performed for the first time in different places around the world.

Special Recognition

She has received special mentions from the Canadian Race Relations Foundation. This was for two of her projects. One project helped immigrants learning French connect with future teachers at UQAM. The other project was a guide for teachers. It went with a DVD called "A lesson in discrimination."
