Nidfurn is a charming village located in Switzerland, within the Glarus region. It's now part of the larger Glarus Süd municipality. This village sits in a beautiful valley, surrounded by nature.
A Look Back in Time
Nidfurn was first mentioned in old records way back in 1289, showing it has a long history! During the Middle Ages (a time period from about 500 to 1500 AD), Nidfurn was one of the wealthiest places in Glarus.
For a long time, the main way people made a living was by raising animals like cows, sheep, and goats. In the 1700s, making dairy products became an important business. Some people also spun cotton by hand, but this never grew into big factories.
In 1879, a railway line was built, connecting Nidfurn to the rest of the Swiss train network. This made it much easier for people and goods to travel.
Nidfurn used to be its own small municipality. But on July 1, 2006, it joined with the municipality of Haslen. Then, on January 1, 2011, Haslen (including Nidfurn) became part of the new, larger municipality of Glarus Süd.
Where is Nidfurn?
Nidfurn is located in the valley of the Linth river. The village itself is on the west side of the river, about 560 meters (1,837 feet) above sea level.
To the south of Nidfurn, you'll find Leuggelbach. To the north is Schwanden. Across the river to the east is Haslen.
Getting Around Nidfurn
Nidfurn is on Hauptstrasse 17, which is a main road that goes through the entire canton of Glarus. This road then climbs up the Klausen Pass into the canton of Uri.
There's also a railway line that runs next to the main road and the Linth river. The Klausen Pass is usually only open for traffic between June and September because of snow. For the rest of the year, the road and railway are the main ways to get to Nidfurn.
The village has its own train station, called Nidfurn-Haslen railway station. You can catch the Zürich S-Bahn service S25 here. This train runs every hour between Linthal and Zurich.
Population Changes
Over the years, the number of people living in Nidfurn has changed. In 1701, there were about 135 people. The population grew quite a bit by 1860, reaching 477 residents. However, it then saw some declines, with 258 people living there in 2000.
