Air Commodore Nigel James Phillips was born on May 10, 1963. He is a British diplomat and a former officer in the Royal Air Force. He used to be the Governor of the Falkland Islands and the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Since August 13, 2022, he has been the Governor of Saint Helena, Ascension, and Tristan da Cunha.

Nigel Phillips's Career Journey
Nigel Phillips joined the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1984. He served in many different roles and eventually reached the rank of Air Commodore. This is a senior rank in the RAF, similar to a brigadier general in other armies.
Early Education and Roles
From 1993 to 1997, he studied at Durham University. He earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree there. In 2001, he continued his studies at King's College London. He got a Master's degree in Defence Studies, focusing on military, political, and international topics. He also received a special award called the Cormorant Fellowship.
After his studies, he worked as a Senior Staff Officer at the Defence Communication Services Agency. In 2003, he moved to the British Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden. There, he worked as a Defence Attaché. A Defence Attaché is a military expert who works at an embassy to help with military relations between countries.
Moving to New Assignments
In 2007, Phillips left Stockholm. He became the Deputy Commandant and Garrison Commander at the Defence College of Communications and Information Systems. This college trains people in military communications.
Two years later, in 2009, Phillips was assigned to the British Embassy in Warsaw, Poland. He again served as the Defence Attaché. In the same year, he received the Master of Signals Award from the Royal Signals Institute.
Strategic Roles and Governorships
In 2012, Phillips took Russian language training at the Defence Academy. This helped him prepare for his next role. In 2014, he became the Head of Russian Strategic Studies and Wider Europe Policy at the Ministry of Defence. This department is in charge of the UK's armed forces.
Queen Elizabeth II honored him in 2013. He was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE). This is a high award for his service. In 2016, Phillips became the Deputy Military Representative to the UK's representative to the European Union in Brussels.
In June 2017, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office announced his new role. Phillips was appointed the new Governor of the Falkland Islands and Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. He took over this role on September 12, 2017.
In April 2022, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office announced his next appointment. He became the Governor of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.
