Alison Mary Blake is a British diplomat. A diplomat is someone who represents their country when dealing with other countries.
She is currently the Governor of the Falkland Islands. She is also the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. Before these roles, she was the British High Commissioner to Bangladesh. She also served as the British Ambassador to Afghanistan.
Career
Early Life and Education
Alison Blake went to the Roan School for Girls. She then studied at Merton College, Oxford. In 1980, she earned a degree in ancient and modern history.
From 1983 to 1987, she worked as an archaeologist. She helped uncover and study old things. Her work was for places like the Museum of London and English Heritage.
Diplomatic Roles
In 1989, Alison Blake joined the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This is the part of the UK government that deals with the military. She worked there for a few years.
In 1995, she moved to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO). This office handles the UK's relationships with other countries. She worked in different places around the world:
- From 1996 to 1999, she was part of the UK team at NATO in Brussels. NATO is a group of countries that work together for safety.
- From 1999 to 2001, she worked in London. She helped manage relations with countries in the Eastern Adriatic region.
- From 2001 to 2005, she worked at the British embassy in Washington, D.C., USA.
- From 2006 to 2007, she helped with foreign and development policy.
- From 2007 to 2011, she led a group at the FCO that focused on conflicts.
- From 2011 to 2014, she was the Deputy High Commissioner in Pakistan. A High Commissioner is like an ambassador for countries in the Commonwealth.
In January 2016, she became the High Commissioner to Bangladesh. This means she was the UK's top representative in Bangladesh.
In 2018, she received an award called the Companion of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG). This award was for her important work in British foreign and security policy.
In May 2019, she became the Ambassador to Afghanistan. She was the UK's main representative there until June 2021.
Leading the Falkland Islands
In March 2022, it was announced that Alison Blake would take on a new role. She became the new Governor of the Falkland Islands. She also became the Commissioner for South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands. She started these roles in July 2022.
Alison Blake is the first female governor of the Falkland Islands.
