Who Was Nigel de Brus?

Nigel de Brus was part of a very important Scottish family, the House of Bruce. His older brother, Robert, would later become one of Scotland's most famous kings. Nigel grew up during a time when Scotland was fighting hard to remain an independent country. He chose to stand with his brother and help him in this big struggle.

Fighting for Scotland's Freedom

The Wars of Scottish Independence were a series of battles between Scotland and England. Scotland wanted to be free from English rule. Nigel de Brus was a brave supporter of this cause. He fought alongside his brother, Robert the Bruce, to help Scotland win its freedom.

The Stand at Kildrummy Castle

In 1306, Nigel de Brus showed great courage. He was defending Kildrummy Castle with his soldiers. At the time, English forces were looking for Robert the Bruce's wife, Elizabeth, his daughter Marjorie, and his sisters Mary and Christina. They were also looking for Isabella MacDuff, Countess of Buchan.

Nigel and his men bravely held off the English army. Their actions gave the women enough time to escape from the castle. Sadly, the women were later captured by the English. They were betrayed by William, 3rd Earl of Ross at St Duthac in Tain.
