Captured During War
Mary Bruce was captured along with other important women. These included her sisters, Christina Bruce and Marjorie Bruce. Her brother's wife, Elizabeth de Burgh, was also captured. A supporter named Isabella MacDuff was taken too.
The Earl of Ross handed them over to the English. King Edward I of England ordered Mary to be held in a cage. This cage was made of iron or wood. It was placed where people could see it at Roxburgh Castle. Isabella MacDuff was also held in a similar cage at Berwick Castle.
In 1310, Mary was moved to better conditions. This change might have happened because Robert the Bruce was becoming stronger. The English may have wanted to keep Mary alive. She was a valuable hostage. They also worried she might be rescued from Roxburgh Castle.
Freedom After Battle
