Nikolai Dmitrievich Brashman (Russian: Николáй Дми́триевич Брáшман; German: Nikolaus Braschmann) was an important mathematician from Austria who later lived in Russia. He was born on June 14, 1796, and passed away on May 25, 1866. He was known for teaching many bright students, including famous mathematicians like Pafnuty Chebyshev and August Davidov.

Early Life and Education

Nikolai Brashman was born in a place called Neu-Raußnitz. This town is now known as Rousínov and is located in the Czech Republic. Back then, it was part of the Austrian Empire.

He went to college at the University of Vienna. He also studied at the Vienna Polytechnic Institute. Here, he learned a lot about mathematics and science. One of his teachers was Joseph Johann Littrow, who was a well-known astronomer and mathematician.

Moving to Russia

In 1824, Nikolai Brashman decided to move to Saint Petersburg, a big city in Russia. Soon after, he got a job at Kazan University. This was a great opportunity for him to share his knowledge.

Professor in Moscow

Later, in 1834, he became a professor at Moscow University. He taught applied mathematics. This is a type of math that helps solve real-world problems. For example, it can be used in engineering or physics.

Important Contributions

Nikolai Brashman is remembered for several important things he did in Russia.

Founding the Moscow Mathematical Society

He helped start the Moscow Mathematical Society. This was a group for mathematicians to meet, share ideas, and work together. It was a big step for mathematics in Russia.

Starting a Math Journal

He also helped create a special magazine called Matematicheskii Sbornik. This journal published new discoveries and research papers in mathematics. It became a very important place for mathematicians to share their work.

Awards and Recognition

In 1836, Nikolai Brashman received the Demidov Prize. This was a very important award given by the Russian Academy of Sciences for his textbook on mechanics. Mechanics is the study of how things move and the forces that make them move.

Because of his great work, the Russian Academy of Sciences made him a corresponding member in 1855. This means they recognized him as an important scientist, even if he wasn't a full-time member.

Nikolai Brashman passed away in Moscow in 1866. He left behind a legacy of teaching, research, and helping to build the mathematics community in Russia.
