Nikolai Ivanovich Pankin (Russian: Николай Иванович Панкин; 2 January 1949 – 13 October 2018) was a famous swimmer from Russia. He was born in Moscow, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time. Nikolai was especially good at breaststroke swimming. He competed in three Olympic Games and won many medals during his career. After his swimming days, he became a coach.

Nikolai Pankin's Swimming Journey

Nikolai Pankin was a very talented breaststroke swimmer. He competed in the Olympic Games three times. These were in 1968, 1972, and 1976. He swam in the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke races. He also took part in the 4 × 100-meter medley relay.

Olympic Success

At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, Nikolai won a bronze medal. This was for the 100-meter breaststroke event. It was a great achievement for him. In the next two Olympics, he did not win more medals. However, he often finished close to the top in the medley relay races.

European and World Medals

Nikolai also won many medals at other big swimming events.

  • At the European Championships in 1970, he won a gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. He also got a silver in the 200-meter breaststroke and a bronze in the 4×100-meter medley relay.
  • In 1974, he won another gold medal at the European Championships for the 100-meter breaststroke. He also earned a silver and a bronze medal there.
  • He won a bronze medal at the World Championships in 1975 for the 200-meter breaststroke.

Universiade Achievements

Nikolai also did very well at the Universiade. This is a major sports event for university students.

  • In 1970, he won a gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. He also got a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke.
  • In 1973, he won two gold medals. He won both the 100-meter and 200-meter breaststroke events.

Later Life

Nikolai Pankin passed away on October 13, 2018. He was 69 years old. He died in Murom, Russia.
