Nikolay Haytov (born September 15, 1919 – died June 30, 2002) was a famous Bulgarian writer. He wrote many stories, plays, and articles. Haytov was also known for his work about Vasil Levski, a very important Bulgarian hero. He was a great storyteller who shared tales about Bulgarian life and history.

Nikolay Haytov's Early Life and Education
Nikolay Haytov grew up in a small village called YavrovoPlovdiv Province, Bulgaria. His family was not rich. After finishing junior high school in his village, he moved to Plovdiv. There, he worked many different jobs to support himself. He was an apprentice in a flour shop, a waiter, and even worked on the railway.
inHe finished high school in Asenovgrad in 1938. During this time, he became very interested in reading. He loved the works of famous Bulgarian writers like Zahari Stoyanov and Ivan Vazov. In 1943, he graduated from the Faculty of Forestry in Sofia. This means he studied how to manage forests.
After his studies, Haytov worked as a forest guard and forester. He spent time in the beautiful Rhodope Mountains. This experience helped him learn a lot about nature and the people living in these areas. These experiences later inspired many of his stories.
Nikolay Haytov's Writing Career
Nikolay Haytov started his writing journey in 1954. His first article was published in a magazine called Septemvri. He continued to write for this magazine and other newspapers. His early articles were collected in his first book, Sapernitsi (which means Rivals), published in 1957.
In 1959, he became a member of the Union of Bulgarian Writers
(UBW). This is a group for professional writers in Bulgaria. He worked as an editor for different newspapers and magazines. From 1975 to 1977, he was the chairman of the Capital Council of Culture. He also served as a secretary for the UBW.Famous Works and Stories
One of Haytov's most famous books is Divi razkazi (Wild Stories), released in 1967. This book became incredibly popular. It has been published ten times in Bulgaria and translated into 28 different languages, including Chinese. Wild Stories is considered one of the most important modern Bulgarian books. It is even part of the UNESCO Historical Collection, which means it's recognized as a significant cultural work.
Haytov's Izbrani proizvedeniya (Selected Works) was published in three volumes in 1989. He wrote more than 10 plays for the stage and over 800 articles and reviews. His books have sold more than 4 million copies in Bulgaria!
He also wrote screenplays for many films and TV series. Some of his well-known works include the films The Goat Horn (1972) and Manly Times (1977). He also wrote for the TV series Captain Petko Voivode.
Nikolay Haytov was the chairman of the Union of Bulgarian Writers from 1993 to 1999. He received many awards for his writing. He had two sons, Aleksandar and Zdravets, and a daughter, Elena. Nikolay Haytov passed away in 2002.
