Nikolai Nosov (born November 23, 1908, died July 26, 1976) was a famous Soviet writer. He created many funny short stories and popular fairy tale novels for children. He is best known for his amazing trilogy about the adventures of a character named Dunno and his friends.

Early Life and Education
Nikolai Nosov was born in Kiev, which is now in Ukraine. His father was an entertainer, like an actor or performer.
Nikolai studied art in Kiev from 1927 to 1929. After that, he moved to Moscow to study filmmaking. He finished his studies in 1932.
Nosov's Career as a Creator
Nikolai Nosov had a very interesting career, first making films and then writing stories.
Making Films
From 1932 to 1951, Nosov worked as a producer. He made animated films and educational films. Some of these films were for the Red Army. Because of his work, he received an award called the Order of the Red Star in 1943.
Starting to Write Stories
Nosov began publishing his stories in 1938. His early stories were very popular. Some of them include Zatejniki (which means Jokers), Alive Hat, Cucumbers, Miraculous Trousers, and Dreamers.
Many of these stories were first printed in a children's magazine called Murzilka. Later, they were collected in his first book, Rat-tat-tat, published in 1945.
Nosov introduced a new kind of hero to children's books. This hero was often a bit naive but also smart. They were usually naughty and very curious. These characters loved to be active and often found themselves in funny or unusual situations.
Popular Books for Young Readers
Nosov wrote many popular books for older children and teenagers. These include:
- Merry Family (1949)
- The Kolya Sinitsyn's Diary (1950)
- Vitya Maleev at School and at Home (1951)
The book Vitya Maleev at School and at Home was so good that it won a special award. It received the Stalin State Prize in 1952.
The Adventures of Dunno
Nikolai Nosov is most famous for his fairy tales about a character named Dunno (Neznaika). Dunno is a tiny, mischievous boy who lives in a magical world with other tiny people.
The first story about Dunno was a fairy tale called Vintik, Shpuntik and vacuum cleaner. Later, Dunno became the main character in a famous series of books:
- The Adventures of Dunno and His Friends (1953–1954)
- Dunno in Sun City (1958)
- Dunno on the Moon (1964–1965)
These books tell about Dunno's exciting journeys and the funny things that happen to him and his friends.
Later Works and Awards
Nosov continued to write throughout his life. He received another important award, the RSFSR State Prize, in 1969. This award is named after Nadezhda Krupskaya.
He also wrote some books about his own life. These include:

Tributes and Legacy
On November 23, 2018, Google honored Nikolai Nosov with a special Google Doodle. This was to celebrate his 110th birthday and remember his wonderful stories.
