Nile Michael Wilson (born 17 January 1996) is a former British artistic gymnast. He is famous for winning an Olympic bronze medal in the men's horizontal bar at the 2016 Summer Olympics. He also earned a silver medal with the British team at the 2015 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships. This was the first time a British men's team won a medal at the World Championships.

Nile Wilson is a five-time Commonwealth Games champion. He won the all-around title in 2018. He was also the first British gymnast to win the European horizontal bar title. In January 2021, Nile retired from gymnastics due to injuries and health reasons. In March 2023, he won the fifteenth series of Dancing on Ice.

Nile's Early Gymnastics Career

Nile Wilson became the British Junior Champion in March 2014. He also received the Young Sportsman male award in Leeds.

In May 2014, he competed at the European Championships in Sofia. He won five gold medals there. This made him the first British gymnast to win so many gold medals at the European Junior Gymnastics Championships. After this, he joined the senior level to compete for England at the Commonwealth Games.

2014 Commonwealth Games Success

At the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Nile Wilson helped the England team win a gold medal. He also qualified for the Individual all-around final. He then won a bronze medal in the all-around competition.

He earned a silver medal in the Parallel bars final. Later, he won his first individual Commonwealth gold medal in the Horizontal Bar final. His teammate Kristian Thomas won silver in that event.

2015 World Championships

Wilson competed at the 2015 Gymnastics World Championships in Glasgow. He performed well in the qualification round. He helped his team win a silver medal, which was a big achievement for British gymnastics. Nile also reached the Parallel Bars final, finishing in 8th place.

2016 Summer Olympics

On July 12, 2016, Nile Wilson was chosen for the 2016 Olympic team. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he made history. He became the first British gymnast to win a bronze medal on the horizontal bar.

2017 World Championships

In January 2017, Nile Wilson hurt his left ankle during training. He needed surgery to fix it. However, he recovered quickly and was able to compete in the 2017 Artistic Gymnastics World Championships. He finished sixth in the all-around final.

2018 Commonwealth Games

Retirement from Gymnastics

On January 14, 2021, Nile Wilson announced his retirement from competitive gymnastics. He shared this news in a video on his YouTube channel. He explained that ongoing health problems from gymnastics were the main reason for his decision.

After retiring, Wilson has spoken about the importance of mental well-being for athletes. In September 2022, he gave a TED Talk about how mental health affects professional athletes. In March 2023, he won the TV show Dancing on Ice with his dance partner Olivia Smart.
