Nina Karlovna Bari (Russian: Нина Карловна Бари) was a brilliant Soviet mathematician. She was born on November 19, 1901, and passed away on July 15, 1961. Nina Bari is well-known for her important work on trigonometric series. These are special kinds of math problems that help us understand waves and repeating patterns.

Early Life and Studies

Nina Bari was born in Russia on November 19, 1901. Her parents were Olga and Karl Adolfovich Bari, who was a doctor. In 1918, Nina made history. She became one of the first women to be accepted into the Physics and Mathematics Department at the famous Moscow State University.

She finished her studies very quickly, graduating in 1921. This was only three years after she started university! After graduating, Nina Bari began teaching. She taught at several places, including the Moscow Forestry Institute. She also received a special paid research fellowship. This was the only one given out by the new Research Institute of Mathematics and Mechanics.

As a student, Nina joined an exclusive group called the Luzitania. This was an informal group for academics and friends. She studied under a famous math teacher named Nikolai Luzin. Nina focused on trigonometric series and functions. She quickly became one of his best students. In 1922, she shared her main research findings with the Moscow Mathematical Society. She was the first woman ever to speak to this important society.

In 1926, Nina Bari finished her doctoral work. Her research was about trigonometric expansions. She even won the Glavnauk Prize for her amazing thesis. In 1927, Nina had a chance to study in Paris. She went to the Sorbonne and the College de France. Later, she attended the Polish Mathematical Congress in Lwów, Poland. A special grant helped her return to Paris to continue her studies.

Around this time, the Luzitania group started to break apart. Professor Luzin's demanding personality caused many mathematicians to leave. By 1930, the group was gone. Luzin himself left Moscow State University. In 1932, Nina Bari became a professor at Moscow State University. In 1935, she earned the title of Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences. This was a very high research degree. By then, she had already completed groundbreaking work on trigonometric series.

Career and Later Life

Nina Bari worked closely with another mathematician, Dmitrii Menshov. They collaborated on many research projects together. During the 1940s, Nina and Menshov led the work on function theory at Moscow State University.

In 1952, she published an important paper. It was about primitive functions and trigonometric series. She also presented her work at major math conferences. These included the 1956 Third All-Union Congress in Moscow. She also spoke at the 1958 International Congress of Mathematicians in Edinburgh.

Mathematics was the most important part of Nina Bari's life. But she also loved literature and the arts. She was a big fan of mountain hiking. She explored many mountain ranges in Russia. These included the Caucasus, Altai, Pamir, and Tian Shan mountains. Her interest in hiking came from her husband, Viktor Vladimirovich Nemytskii. He was also a Soviet mathematician and a professor at Moscow State. He was a very keen mountain explorer. There are no official records of their marriage. However, people who knew them believed they married later in life.

Nina Bari's last work was her 55th publication. It was a huge 900-page book. This book was about the latest knowledge in trigonometric series theory. It is still considered a key reference for anyone studying function and trigonometric series theory.

Death

Nina Bari passed away in Moscow on July 15, 1961.
