Ninad Gangadhar Bedekar (born August 17, 1949 – died May 10, 2015) was a famous historian, writer, and speaker from Pune, Maharashtra, India. He wrote and spoke mainly in the Marathi language. He was especially known for his deep research into the life of the warrior-king Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. People admired his scientific and careful way of studying Maratha history.
About Ninad Bedekar
Ninad Bedekar was the grandson of Sardar Raste of Pune. His mother, Pramila Tai Bedekar, was a well-known freedom fighter. He first trained as an engineer and worked for Cummins India Limited for 15 years.
Passion for History
Mr. Bedekar was very passionate about history, especially about forts. He researched forts in many parts of India, like Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh. He also studied about 75 forts outside India! He led many trips to these forts to explore them.
He was a lifelong member of important history groups like Shri Shivaji Raigad Smarak Mandal. He also helped the Government of Maharashtra with a committee to fix and beautify old forts.
Writing and Media
Ninad Bedekar knew several languages, including Persian and Arabic. He could also read the old Modi script, which was used for writing Marathi. This helped him study rare historical documents.
He gave many talks about Maratha history all over Maharashtra. He wrote the script for the light and sound show at Shanivarwada, a famous historical palace. He also wrote the script for a Marathi TV show called Peshwai. Mr. Bedekar helped to read and understand old documents written in Modi script about the Maratha Empire. These documents were found in the UK.
He wrote several books, including Durgkatha, Shartiche Shiledar, and Maharastratil Durg. These books showed his great knowledge about forts in India and other countries.
Later Life
Ninad Bedekar passed away in 2015 in Pune at the age of 65. He left behind a rich legacy of historical research and writings.
