Nissan Skyline facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Nissan Skyline (スカイライン in Japanese) is a famous line of cars that started way back in 1955. It was first made by a company called Prince Motor Company. Later, in 1966, Prince Motor Company joined with Nissan Motor Company. From then on, Nissan continued to make the Skyline.

In Japan, the Skyline and a bigger car called the Nissan Gloria were sold in special stores known as Nissan Prince Shops. Today, you can find the Skyline as a sleek coupé or a practical sedan. These cars are often recognized by their cool, round brake lights. The station wagon version of the Skyline stopped being made in 1989.

The Popular R30 to R34 Models

The Skyline models from R30 to R34 are super popular with car fans, especially in Japan. These cars were made from the 1980s until the early 2000s. People love to customize them!

What Made Them Special?

These models often came with powerful straight-6 engines and turbochargers, which made them very fast. They also had a special, high-performance version called the GT-R.

Skyline's Fame Around the World

Even though the Skyline wasn't officially sold in the United States, it became famous there. Many people saw it in video games, movies, and car magazines. Because of this, lots of Skylines were brought into the US between 1999 and 2005. A company called Motorex even worked to get permission to import certain GT-R and GTS models. They had to make sure these cars met US safety rules.

The Modern Skyline: V6 Engines and New Directions

The 11th version of the Skyline, known as the V35, brought big changes. It stopped using the classic straight-6 engine and turbocharging. Instead, it switched to V6 engines, a change that continued for all future Skylines.

The GT-R Becomes Its Own Car

With the V35, the super-fast GT-R became its own separate car line. Nissan decided to keep the Skyline as a luxury-sport car. Another car, the 350Z, was made on the same platform and brought back Nissan's pure sports car line.

Skyline Goes Global as Infiniti

The V35 was the first Skyline model to be sold outside of Japan, specifically in North America. There, it was sold as the Infiniti G35, under Nissan's luxury brand. Later models, like the V36 and J50, were sold in Europe, North America, South Korea, Taiwan, and the Middle East as the Infiniti G37.

A World Record for Skyline Fans

On April 11, 2010, something amazing happened for Nissan Skyline fans! A world record was set for the biggest ever Nissan Skyline gathering. This event took place at Silverstone in the United Kingdom and was even recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records. It was a huge day for Skyline lovers!
