Nivala (once called Pidisjärvi) is a town and municipality in Finland. A municipality is like a local government area. Nivala is found in the Northern Ostrobothnia region.
The town has a population of 10,454 people (as of 31 December 2023). It covers an area of 536.88 square kilometres (207.29 sq mi). About 8.92 km2 (3.44 sq mi) of this area is water. This means the population density is about 19.83 inhabitants per square kilometre (51.4/sq mi). Most people in Nivala speak only Finnish.
The coat of arms for Nivala shows a wooden gate. This gate is a common sight in the area. It also looks a bit like the letter 'N' for Nivala. Kalervo Kallio designed this coat of arms. He was the son of Kyösti Kallio, who later became president. The local council approved the design in November 1964. The Finnish government officially approved it in February 1965.

Nivala shares borders with several other municipalities. These are Haapajärvi, Haapavesi, Sievi, and Ylivieska.

The Kalajoki river flows through the municipality. The largest lake in the area is Pidisjärvi. There are also two other lakes called Suojärvi and Erkkisjärvi.
Famous People from Nivala
Nivala has been home to some important people:
- Kyösti Kallio was the fourth President of Finland. He served from 1937 to 1940. He lived in Nivala.
- Rakel Liehu is a well-known writer.
- Maria Lohela was the Speaker of the Parliament of Finland from 2015 to 2018. The Speaker leads the meetings of the country's main law-making body.
- Atte Ohtamaa is a professional hockey player.
