North Ostrobothnia (called Finnish: Pohjois-Pohjanmaa in Finnish and Swedish: Norra Österbotten in Swedish) is a large region in Finland. It's located in the central part of the country. This region shares borders with other Finnish regions like Lapland, Kainuu, and Central Finland. It also borders Russia.

North Ostrobothnia is known for its beautiful nature. It has many forests, lakes, and rivers. The region's capital city is Oulu. Oulu is the largest city in northern Finland. It is a very important center for technology and education.

Exploring North Ostrobothnia's Communities

North Ostrobothnia is divided into 30 smaller areas called municipalities. Think of them like towns or local districts. Out of these 30 municipalities, 11 are big enough to be called cities. These cities are marked in bold in the list below.

The municipalities are grouped into smaller sub-regions. Each sub-region has its own main towns and villages.

How North Ostrobothnia is Governed

The people of North Ostrobothnia vote in elections to choose their representatives. These representatives help make decisions for the region. The results from the 2019 Finnish parliamentary election show which political parties people in North Ostrobothnia supported.

Here's how the votes were shared among the main political parties:

  • Centre Party received 30.15% of the votes.
  • Finns Party received 20.38% of the votes.
  • Left Alliance received 12.10% of the votes.
  • National Coalition Party received 11.53% of the votes.
  • Social Democratic Party received 10.40% of the votes.
  • Green League received 8.16% of the votes.
  • Christian Democrats received 2.22% of the votes.
  • Other parties received smaller percentages of the votes.

These percentages show how popular each party was in the region during that election. The parties with more votes get more seats in the parliament. This means they have more say in how Finland is run.
