The Nokia 9000 Communicator was a very early type of smartphone. It was made by Nokia and first shown in 1996. This device was special because it was both a mobile phone and a small computer.

It was one of the first phones that could do more than just make calls. It helped pave the way for the smartphones we use today.

Nokia 9000: A Phone and a Computer!

The Nokia 9000 Communicator looked like a regular phone when closed. But it could open up like a book. When you opened it, you would find a large screen and a full keyboard inside.

The screen was black and white, but it was quite big for its time. It had a resolution of 640 by 200 pixels. The keyboard was a QWERTY keyboard, just like on a computer. This made it easy to type messages and emails.

This device weighed about 397 grams, which is almost as much as a can of soda. It had a special computer chip called an Intel i386 CPU. This chip helped it run different programs. It also had 8 MB of memory, which was a lot for a phone back then.

The Communicator could send and receive e-mail and fax messages. It used a special connection called Circuit Switched Data (CSD) over the GSM network. This allowed it to send data at 9.6 kbit/s. It also had a simple web browser for looking at websites. You could even print documents using its infrared (IrDA) port.

When it first came out, the Nokia 9000 Communicator was quite expensive. It cost about £1,000 in the UK.

What Came Next

The Nokia Communicator line continued to evolve. In 2000, the Nokia 9210 Communicator was released. This new model brought many big changes. It had a color screen, a faster processor, and more internal memory. It also used a new operating system called Symbian.

Later, the 9210i version came out in 2002. It had even more memory and could stream videos. These Communicator phones were very important. They introduced many features that are now common in modern smartphones.
