Manuel "Noli" Leuterio de Castro Jr. (born July 6, 1949) is a well-known Filipino journalist and politician. He served as the 12th Vice President of the Philippines from 2004 to 2010. He was also elected as a Senator in 2001.
Noli de Castro has worked in broadcasting for over fifty years. He is one of the most recognized journalists in the Philippines. He currently anchors the radio program Kabayan and the TV news program TV Patrol.

Who is Noli de Castro?
Early Life and Education
Manuel Leuterio de Castro Jr. was born in Pola, Oriental Mindoro, Philippines, on July 6, 1949. He is the fifth child of Manuel de Castro Sr. and Demetria Leuterio.
He studied at the University of the East and earned a degree in banking and finance in 1971. He also received an honorary doctorate degree from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
A Career in Broadcasting
Noli de Castro started his career in broadcasting during the time of President Ferdinand Marcos. He worked as a field reporter and later became a radio announcer.
Becoming a Radio and TV Host
After the People Power Revolution in 1986, de Castro joined ABS-CBN. He became a host for "At Your Service" on Good Morning! Philippines. He also joined DZMM, an ABS-CBN radio station, as the anchor of Kabayan. This show helped him earn the nickname "Kabayan Noli."
In 1987, he became one of the anchors of the news show TV Patrol. He later became the main anchor of the show in 1996. The next year, de Castro also became an anchor for Magandang Gabi... Bayan. He left TV Patrol in 2001 to run for Senator.
Returning to Broadcasting
While he was Vice President from 2004 to 2010, he co-anchored a weekly radio program called Para Sa'yo, Bayan.
After his term as Vice President ended, de Castro returned to Kabayan in 2010. He also rejoined TV Patrol as an anchor in November 2010. He continued to anchor TV Patrol until October 2021. In 2011, he also started co-anchoring Radyo Patrol Balita: Alas Siyete, which was later renamed.
He has been known to express his views on various government programs. During the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, de Castro supported the Philippine Drug War. He also raised concerns about the Dengvaxia vaccination program. However, the World Health Organization and the Philippine Department of Health later confirmed that Dengvaxia is safe.
In October 2021, de Castro temporarily stopped his broadcasting work to run for Senator in the 2022 elections. However, he later decided to withdraw his candidacy. In November 2021, he returned to ABS-CBN and resumed his roles as anchor for TeleRadyo Balita and Kabayan. He also hosted a new public affairs program called KBYN: Kaagapay ng Bayan until January 2023. In January 2023, he returned to TV Patrol for his third time as an anchor.
Political Career
Serving as Senator (2001–2004)
In the 2001 Philippine Senate election, Noli de Castro received the most votes among all senatorial candidates. He ran as an Independent candidate.
During his three years as a Senator, de Castro wrote many bills and resolutions. These included the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2002 and the Newborn Screening Test Act of 2001.
He did not complete his full six-year term as Senator because he was elected as Vice President in 2004.

In the 2004 Philippine general election, de Castro ran for Vice President. He won by a small number of votes against Senator Loren Legarda. The Supreme Court later confirmed his victory.
As Vice President, he was appointed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as the chairman for housing and urban development (HUDCC). In this role, he also served as chairman of the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG Fund) and other housing agencies. He was also a presidential adviser on overseas Filipino workers.
2010 Presidential Election
Noli de Castro was considered a strong candidate for the 2010 presidential election at first. Many older voters thought he would be a good choice to replace President Arroyo. However, Benigno Aquino III later gained the lead and won the election.
In December 2009, de Castro decided not to run for president. He announced that he would retire from politics after his term as Vice President ended. He stated his intention to focus full-time on broadcast journalism.
2022 Senate Election Attempt
De Castro initially announced his plan to run for Senator in the 2022 Philippine Senate election. He joined the Aksyon Demokratiko party in October 2021 and filed his candidacy. However, he withdrew his candidacy a few days later.
