Noordoostpolder is a special area and a municipality in the central Netherlands. It is located in the Flevoland province. The name means "North-East Polder."

A polder is land that was once under water, but has been drained and made suitable for living and farming. Noordoostpolder was created this way. The main town and administrative center is Emmeloord, which is right in the middle of the polder.

History of Noordoostpolder

The land that is now Noordoostpolder was once part of a large inland sea called the Zuiderzee. In the 20th century, the Dutch started a huge project called the Zuiderzee Works. They built dikes and drained parts of this sea. This created new land for farming and places for people to live.

Noordoostpolder was officially established as a municipality on January 1, 1962. It was a big step in creating new land for the country.
