Dame Norma Christina Elizabeth, Lady Major was born on 12 February 1942. She is known as a kind person who helps others, which is called being a philanthropist. She is married to Sir John Major, who used to be the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Early Life and Education
Norma Christina Elizabeth Wagstaff was born in Shropshire, England. Her father, Norman Reuel Wagstaff, was a soldier in the Royal Artillery. Her mother, Edith Georgina Wagstaff, used to sell umbrellas.
Norma was very young when her father passed away in a motorcycle accident. This happened just after the end of the Second World War. After this, her mother started using her maiden name, Johnson. So, Norma grew up being known as Norma Johnson.
Norma went to different schools, including a boarding school in Bexhill-on-Sea. She also attended Oakfield Preparatory School in Dulwich and Peckham School for Girls. At Peckham School, she was the head girl, which means she was a leader among the students. She was also very good at making clothes, a skill known as dressmaking. When she was younger, she was part of the Young Conservatives group.
Marriage and Family
Norma met John Major at a meeting for the Conservative Party. This was during a political campaign in 1970. They got married on 3 October 1970.
Norma and John Major have two children together. Their son is named James Major, and their daughter is named Elizabeth Major. While her husband was Prime Minister from 1990 to 1997, Norma kept a quiet public life. She spent her time doing important charity work. She also wrote two books during this period. One book was about a famous singer, Joan Sutherland: The Authorised Biography. The other book was about the Prime Minister's country home, Chequers: The Prime Minister's Country House and its History.
Helping Others
Norma Major has done a lot of work to help people. In June 1999, she was given a special honor called Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). This award recognized all her hard work in charity.
She is a strong supporter of a charity called Mencap. This organization helps people with learning disabilities. Norma Major has been very successful in helping Mencap raise a lot of money. She is credited with helping to raise about £6,000,000 for the charity.
