Prince Norodom Yuvaneath (Khmer: នរោត្តម យុវនាថ) was born on October 17, 1943. He was the first son of Norodom Sihanouk, who was the King of Cambodia. His mother was Princess Sisowath Pongsanmoni.
Prince Yuvaneath was also the half-brother of the current King, Norodom Sihamoni. He passed away on January 13, 2021, at the age of 77.
Early Life and Education
Prince Norodom Yuvaneath went to school at the Lycée Sisowath. He was very good with languages. Besides his native Khmer, he also spoke French and English.
In 1959, when he was a teenager, Prince Yuvaneath took part in the World Jamboree. This was a big international event for Scouts. It took place in the Philippines that year.
Family and Moving Abroad
Prince Norodom Yuvaneath married Tea Kim Yin in June 1962. They started their family together.
In 1970, there was a big change in Cambodia's government. Because of this, Prince Yuvaneath and his family had to leave their home. They moved to Beijing, China, where they lived for several years.
Later, in 1975, the family moved again to Hong Kong. Then, in 1980, they made a final move to the United States. They settled down in Connecticut.
Role in Government
In 1993, after a long time, King Norodom Sihanouk returned to Cambodia. He brought back the monarchy, which is when a country is led by a king or queen.
On December 31, 1993, King Sihanouk gave Prince Yuvaneath an important job. He made him a Sdech Krom Luon, which meant he was a special advisor to the King. This role was similar to being a deputy prime minister.
When King Sihanouk stepped down, his younger half-brother, Norodom Sihamoni, became the new King. King Sihamoni also appointed Prince Yuvaneath as a top royal advisor.
Prince Yuvaneath believed that trials for past events in Cambodia would not help the country heal. He thought it was better for everyone to work together for peace. He was also honored with the Royal Order of Monisaraphon.
Passing Away
Prince Norodom Yuvaneath passed away on January 13, 2021. He died in Branford, Connecticut, in the United States, at the age of 77.
