North Amherst is a special area in the town of Amherst, located in Hampshire County, Massachusetts, United States. It is called a "census-designated place" (CDP) because the government tracks its population and other facts separately. In 2010, about 6,819 people lived there. This was more than the 6,019 people counted in 2000. North Amherst is also part of the larger Springfield area.

Exploring North Amherst's Location

North Amherst is found in the northern part of Amherst. Its exact location is 42°24′22″N 72°31′16″W / 42.40611°N 72.52111°W / 42.40611; -72.52111. To the south, it shares a border with the Amherst Center area. To the southwest, it borders the town of Hadley.

North Amherst's Borders

The edges of North Amherst follow natural and man-made lines. The Mill River forms part of its western border near Hadley. The border then goes east across Massachusetts Route 116 and reaches Massachusetts Route 63. From there, it follows roads like Pulpit Hill Road, Mill Street, Sand Hill Road, and Pine Street to the New England Central Railroad line. The border then moves south along the railroad to Tilson Farm Road. Finally, it goes west along Tilson Farm Road and Eastman Lane to North Pleasant Street, following a small stream back to the Hadley town line.

According to the United States Census Bureau, North Amherst covers a total area of about 5.5 square kilometers (2.1 square miles). Most of this area is land. Only a very small part, about 0.07%, is water.

Homes and History in North Amherst

North Amherst has many different types of homes. You'll find large apartment buildings, often home to students from the University of Massachusetts Amherst. There are also many beautiful old houses. The North Amherst Center Historic District is a special area listed on the National Register of Historic Places. People say this area is a great example of what a farm community looked like in the 1800s.

Many middle-income families in Amherst live in North Amherst. The main street, North Pleasant Street, has many housing areas built off it. One of the biggest neighborhoods in Amherst, called "Grantwood," is located here. North Amherst is also home to two cohousing communities: Pioneer Valley and Pine Street Cohousing. These are places where people live in private homes but share common spaces and activities.

Cushman Village: A Nearby Historic Spot

Just east of North Amherst is a small area called Cushman Village. It's special because its roads loop back into each other, unlike the more grid-like roads in other parts of Amherst. Cushman Village has many old, historic homes, as well as the Cushman Common (a shared green space) and the Cushman Store.

Amazing Amphibian Tunnels

North Amherst is famous for its special tunnels built for amphibians. The Henry Street salamander tunnels run under Henry Street. These tunnels help spotted salamanders safely cross the road to reach vernal pools. Vernal pools are temporary ponds that salamanders use for breeding. These tunnels were the first of their kind in the United States!
