The North Egremont Historic District is a special area in Egremont, Massachusetts. It is like a time capsule that shows how a small village grew. This district covers a crossroads where important roads met. These roads connected places like Kinderhook, New York and Hillsdale, New York to other towns. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1989 because of its important history.

Discovering North Egremont's Past

The area of Egremont was first settled in the mid-1700s. At that time, it was mostly spread-out farms. The village of North Egremont started to grow after new roads were built.

How the Village Grew

Two important roads helped North Egremont become a village. One road, now called Prospect Lake Road, was built in 1803. It connected Hillsdale, New York to Alford, Massachusetts. Another road, now Route 71, also opened in 1803. It linked South Egremont to Kinderhook, New York.

These new roads made the crossroads a busy place. A tavern, which was like an inn for travelers, was built here in 1790. There were also mills nearby on Prospect Lake. These mills used water power to cut wood and grind grain. In 1814, a general store opened. This store is still open today as the Old Egremont Country Store!

Important Buildings and Places

The North Egremont Historic District has many old and interesting buildings. The oldest house in the area has parts that date back to 1764. This shows how long people have lived here.

The district also includes three historic church buildings:

  • The oldest church was a Baptist meetinghouse built in 1816. It has been changed a lot over the years.
  • A newer Baptist church was built in 1887. It replaced the first one.
  • A Methodist church was built in 1861. It has a special style called Renaissance Revival.

Another important building is the North Egremont School. It was built in 1880. This school was made of wood and had clapboard siding. It served the children of the village for many years.
